A USDT freeze happens when an address is added to Tether’s on-chain blacklist.
Once blacklisted, the address can no longer send USDT. The balance remains visible in the wallet but is locked in place.
Incoming transfers may still arrive. Any USDT received by the address can become trapped as well.
USDT is issued by Tether, a centralized issuer with controls built into the token contract.
On Ethereum and Tron, Tether can restrict addresses from moving USDT when required for legal, compliance, sanctions, fraud, or law enforcement reasons.
Tether’s USDT contracts include privileged blacklist functions such as addBlackList, removeBlackList, and destroyBlackFunds.
These actions are recorded on-chain, which makes blacklist status and freeze activity publicly verifiable.

If a wallet you control is blacklisted, its USDT cannot be moved until the restriction is removed by Tether.
For businesses, the practical next step is to assess exposure. Check related wallets, counterparties, deposits, and transaction history connected to the frozen address.
